First Compact-stompbox Digital Delay pedal was made in 1983, and we called it Boss Digital Delay DD2 Made in Japan (MIJ) with green and Blue Lable. It was manucfatured by Roland that very well-known as effects pedal factory who produce hig end digital delay rack such Roland SDE-2000 or SDE-3000 (used by Yngwie, Malmsteen, David Gilmour, The Edge, etc)
Large Memory Chip (MC) that was used in SDE3000 at the time was very expensive. And the same chip was used by boss DD2 (user David Gimour, Pete Cornish,Joe Sat, etc), and it made boss DD2 was expensive too. DD2 can delivers an "awesome" tone delay , similar like a warm sound delay that delivers by high end delay rack.
Caused the priced was very expensive, in 1983 boss decided to produce a new product, Boss DD3 (blue lable-made in Japan, blue lable made in Taiwan, pink/dark grey-made in taiwan) , but used different MC that cheaper than before. This MC(memory chip) is smaller then first MC , and had square shape.. the old one had rectangular shape. But in early transition periode (1986) some new boss DD3 japan still used a large MC (old one MC) (may be jut for used up the left old MC). It means not all dd3 japan used old MC (large ones), just DD3 in early 1986.The new DD3 (used small square chip) produce a thin and bright repeat tone, buat DD2 and DD3 early edition can deliver a rich and warm repeat tone and didn't color a guitar tone so much.
